Autonomy Is Overrated. Good Interruption Is Underrated.
The autonomy trap
One of the easiest ways to make an AI agent sound impressive is to talk about autonomy.
How long can it run?
How many steps can it take?
How much can it do without human input?
The assumption is straightforward: the less a person needs to step in, the better the system must be.
That sounds reasonable at first. But in practice, it leaves out something important.
The best agents are not always the ones that avoid interruption. Often, they are the ones that make interruption useful.
Why interruption gets a bad reputation
Interruption is usually treated as friction.
If an agent asks for confirmation, that feels like a rough edge.
If a human needs to redirect the task, that feels like a limitation.
If the system pauses to surface uncertainty, it can look like weakness.
There is some truth in that. Bad interruption is real.
If a system keeps asking for approval on low-risk actions, people stop paying attention. The prompts become noise. Oversight turns into habit. The human stays in the loop on paper, but not in any meaningful way.
That kind of interruption does not improve the work. It just slows it down.
The opposite problem
But removing interruption altogether creates a different failure mode.
An agent can keep moving while drifting away from the real goal. It may still look busy. It may still call tools, edit files, and produce output. From the outside, it can appear productive.
But the system may already be operating on a weak assumption, choosing the wrong path, or crossing a boundary that should have triggered human judgment.
In those moments, the absence of interruption is not a strength. It is a blind spot.
What good interruption looks like
A useful interruption does not happen at every step.
It happens when the task changes shape.
The plan changes.
The work becomes ambiguous.
The agent is about to make broad edits.
There are multiple valid paths with real tradeoffs.
The system is moving from exploration into commitment.
These are the moments where a human adds the most value.
That is why interruption should not be treated as leftover friction that eventually disappears. It is part of the control system.
Trust comes from legibility
This also explains why some agent systems feel more trustworthy than others.
Trust does not come only from capability. It also comes from legibility.
Can you see what the system is doing?
Can you tell what it has already done?
Can you step in without losing the thread?
Can you redirect it before the mistake becomes expensive?
A good agent does not just act on your behalf. It stays understandable while it is acting.
That matters more than people admit.
The metric problem
Autonomy is easy to market because it is visible.
You can say the agent ran for thirty minutes.
You can say it completed twenty tasks.
You can say it needed only one confirmation.
Those numbers sound impressive. But they do not tell you whether the agent stayed aligned with the real goal. They do not tell you whether it knew when to ask for help. And they do not tell you whether the human remained meaningfully in control.
In real work, those questions matter more.
What useful systems will do
The best systems will probably not sit at either extreme.
They will not interrupt on every trivial action.
They will not run blindly without meaningful checkpoints.
Instead, they will handle routine work on their own and surface the moments that deserve human judgment.
That is the harder product problem.
It is easy to build a system that interrupts too often.
It is easy to build one that interrupts too little.
The harder task is deciding which moments actually deserve attention.
That is where the product quality is.
Closing reflection
Autonomy is still valuable. But I think it gets too much credit on its own.
The more interesting question is not how to remove interruption. It is how to make interruption timely, meaningful, and rare enough that people pay attention when it happens.
That is less glamorous than full autonomy. It is also probably closer to what useful agent systems will actually look like.
Because the real goal is not zero interruption.
It is better interruption.
